Neznalost neomlouvá, pár minut při seznamování se s ubytovací smlouvou, domovním řádem a dalšími předpisy může ušetřit v budoucnu horké chvilky. Kouření ve veřejných prostorách, rušení nočního klidu, apod. je přímým porušením domovního řádu, které může vést v krajním případě ukončením ubytovací smlouvy.

Závady (neodtéká sprcha, apod.) se hlásí na vrátnici, čím dříve je závada ohlášena, tím dříve může být opravena. Hajzlíky se splachují, trefit se do pisoáru těžké není, toaletní papír má pouze jediný význam a zbytky tvého ochlupení ve sprše nadšení nezpůsobí. Image je nanic, následuj pořádek a čistotu. Obzvláště v kuchyňkách, kde mikrovlné trouby neslouží troubům, ale všem a zaprasená plotna/trouba/kuchyňská linka z tebe lepšího kuchaře neudělá. Na usušení prádla v sušárně postačí 24 hodin.

Zapomínání věcí ve sprchách nebo ponechávání nádobí v kuchyňkách se nemusí vyplatit, obzvlášť pokud se jedná o novou teflonovou pánev (znáte z teleshoppingu). Stejně tak otevřený pokoj, jehož majitel si na minutku odskočil je vítaným místem pro sběratele cizích věcí.

Kolejné je vhodné ve vlastním zájmu platit do 15. dne v měsíci, ať už bankovním převodem nebo složením hotovosti v kanceláři bloku. Výměna prádla probíhá během akademického roku každé dva týdny, pokud nestíháš nech prádlo s kolejenkou na vrátnici, bude ti vyměněno.

We assume usage of MS Windows. In network properties you support of protocol TCP/IP. In properties of protocol TCP/IP you set on tab ''IP address'' the following option: ''Get address from server DHCP'' and then restart your system. This way your computer sets automatically its IP address. Keep on mind, that update on DNS and DHCP servers is ongoing once a day. This implies that after registration of new PC at admin you will get connected on the next day. After reset run the <code>winipcfg</code> (for W9x) program -- where you issue commands ''Refresh'' and than ''Details''. In Windows 2000 it is the <code>ipconfig</code> with certain parameters. If you see, that no parameters are missing and your IP address is in form '''147.32.*.*'''. If after ''Refresh'' computer the computer freezed for a few minutes and than written an error message saying that computer cannot connecto to DHCP or gathered incorrect address (e.g. 169...), than find your televizor and ask for an IP address. Than you should set this IP address manually.

Use this option only in case that setting by DHCP does not work. Usage of MS Windows is assumed. In properties of network you add support for protocol TCP/IP. In properties of TCP/IP protocol in tab ''IP address'' set ''Set IP address manually''. For respective input fields fill in your IP address, netmask (On Strahov netmask is not united, ask your admin or check the information on bulletin board), gateway (can be gathered the same way as netmask). Voluntarily set other items that can be found at [#servery list of servers] (DNS, WINS). At the end fill in field ''host (hostname)'', the name of your PC. To the field domain type "sh.cvut.cz". As a next step restart your system. In this way your PC sets its IP address. Keep on mind, that update of DNS and DHCP servers is once every night, so if you've registrated right now, you'll be able to connect on the next day. After reset run winipcfg (ipconfig on Windows 2000 and newer) and you'll see the values you have set in pervious steps. In case the net does not work, find your televizor and kindly ask for his/her help.

Before you start reading this section, make sure that your computer has correct setup, see previous section of this document. The following text is intented for those, who has well functioning connection and suddenly they experienced malfunction of net. In the answers the possibility of wrong setup is not considered.

===How do I know, that net doesn't work and what should I do in case it happens?===
Try to run program ''ping'' on your PC with command: <code>ping ''IP_gateway''</code>, where ''IP_gateway'' is IP address of router (gateway), that you are connected. This program sends data to the given address and checks what returns. If you see in output ...100% lost... or linex with ...Request Timed Out..., it means that the destination PC cannot be reached from your computer -- referred as pinging. You can download utility [http://faq.sh.cvut.cz/pinger.zip pinger], created by one strahov administrator, that tests the most important routers on Strahov.
The following table assumes, that in time when the net went down you were not making any changes in internet setup. Other prerequisite is that your roomate's connection is working. For testing pings usi only numerical IP addresses and not hostnames! Service for of domain name translation could be inaccessible during the net is down.

Also make sure, that the address of network card (MAC) is the one that you gave to admin. Check if your cable is connected to the right/left connector on the wall, because it cannot be swapped. Also check the power cable to your PC (Modern switches detect irregularities of signal and can disconnect the host in case of power fluctuation).

Old Novel servers where connected via protocol IPX, which is not supported by new CISCO routers (used at Strahov). Nowadays it is not possible to connect by Novell Netware to the school, if the server in schools uses this service by IPX protocol. Servers Novell are gradually converted to IP protocol, but the situation at school's servers is not mapped yet. If you want to transfer some files from school try protocol FTP. Spread of IPX at Strahov is not planned in future.

You could visit the nearest shop and buy "Patch cable category 5 UTP". On some blocks there are students who for a little bribe would prepare you the cable with connector. Cable is your possession. Before you go to buy it, measure the approximate distance between connector and your PC with some reserve. 10 metres of cable costs around 100 CZK.

===What should I do, in case the cable is too long or too short?===
You have no other option, just to buy another cable.

===What should I do before leaving my room for holidays with the cable?===
Keep your cable at home, leave it at luggage room (it is a temporary storage room for Summer holidays) or give it to your friend. Do not leave during the summer holiday in your room. It is your possessment, nobody would give after the holidays. Keep on mind which connector do you use - left or right - and use the same side after you come back.

V současné době jsou data přijímána z multiplexu společnosti Czech Digital Group a to v Praze na 46. kanále. Každý člen připojený síti klubu Silicon Hill může na svém počítači sledovat ve vysoké kvalitě kanály ČT1, ČT2, Prima, Nova a rozhlasové stanice Čro 1, Čro 2, Proglas.

Jako DVB-T server pracuje počítač s procesorem Celeron 900MHz, 64MB RAM, 3GB HDD, a DVB kartou Hauppage WinTV Nova-T. Na stroji běží GNU

If you're convinced that it is a real threat (some security programs display
attempt at hack even in case of ordinary ping) you can do the following
things: post a message to discussion group localnews.sh.cvut.cz to group
info.sh-net, or even better send an email to [mailto:klub@sh.cvut.cz klub@sh.cvut.cz] (it is read by all admins in Strahov).
Portscan or attempt to connect with your computer is not a reason to write
at info.sh-net. Best is if you first try to discuss it with somebody into IT.
In most cases the attack is done by a virus not a person. If it is a member of
student club, you can find and contact him/her by mail (find out in [http://dusps.sh.cvut.cz/findit.php DUSPS] database).

===How should posts to newsgroups and emails look like?===
Mail should be starting with a salutation and end with a signature.
If you are unsure recipient is able to view encoding, don't use that (in case of
other than English alphabet). If you want to insert a non-english text into the
message, make sure that it has the same encoding. If you are writing a reply, split
the text of original letter at least with one empty line.

===Why shouldn't I send emails with size exceeding 50 kB?===
You send a mail with size exceeding 1 MB. Recipient's mail server can be down
for a while or could deny receiving mail. In this case the mail is returned
and waits on [#zkratky-smtp SMTP] server. After some time it sends your mail once
more. Assume that mail returns again, so sending server tries another time to
deliver this large message. Even we consider successful receiving by recepients's
mail server, it can last few days until he/she reads his/her mail. All this time
oversized mail consumes valuable space on some of the servers, that could collapse
when it runs out of free space. Moreover when sending or receiving so large message,
the server is overloaded (for a few minutes or so) and requests of other users
are delayed. For transferring larger amount of data the [#ftp FTP] (File Transfer Protocol) or [#http HTTP] (HyperText Transfer Protocol) is sufficient. For these
purposes you can use your webpage on your block's server.

===Why shouln't I post messages exceeding 50 kB?===
E.g. you attach an image to your post, that has 500 kilobytes. Your client
at first codes the message according to standard MIME. This coding enlarges
the file by 30 percent on average (700 kB) in order to distinguish between
control sequences of news protocol and the data file's content. The post
is saved on newsserver up to 90 days and during the whole period consumes
valuable disk space. Moreover users that use text-only clients, cannot view
your attachment - they see only a bunch of characters of the encoded image.
If you want to present a file to readers of localnews, just save your file
to an [#ftp ftp] or http server and include the [#zkratky-url URL] in your message. For these purpose
it is the best to use personal webpage at your block's server.
